Laura, I remember that photo, I have one of Ruth
in the same outfit, but in a different pose, her holding her foot way above her head, like a standing split. The pictures of Aarons bring back alot of memories of the Martin family.

Good question about the cotton. I guess I had thought it was because of the subsidies given to cotton farmers.

I’m going to read the diary more carefully this week and tag the entries… I want to make a book with photos. Need to gather the photos…

Why was cotton forbidden? Because of the environmental impact or because it took up land for crops?

Isn’t it amazing to find these family stories demonstrating that we’re not the first generation(s) to struggle with tough times? I’d love to see you roll out some more information from the diary. I’ve got the transcript of one of my grandpa’s journal…it helped inspire my blog, which is dedicated to him!

Sounds like a great idea. Perhaps a gardening meetup might provide support on how to make stuff grow like crazy.

BTW, I would LOVE to eat Austin produce in restaurants! Not sure how to facilitate this. Any good resources on the subject?

Congratulations on your new house, Laura! We lived in Travis Heights for three years at the beginning of this decade and loved it. When our kids were little, we had them at Little Stacy park/pool virtually every day. Good time.

Seriously — I know Willie’s shows can be expensive, but they are also like 3 hours long.

Yeah, Wille Rocks! That picture of him on the TMonthly cover is awesome. Just saw him a few months ago at the rodeo (first time to the Rodeo and we went just to see him) and, of course, he was great.

Intriguing blog post. I am considering a move to Austin (vs. Portland) & one of the things I lament most about the Southwest is the lack of viable or even desirable public transportation. I try to drive as little as possible, which is REALLY hard in LA. There is so much to learn/know about making a move to another community or state. Your blog gives me hope.
